Cleaning copper

Particularly in micro-electronics, copper surfaces must be as clean as possible before joining processes such as soldering or bonding to ensure optimum wetting with the soldering material and best possible electrical contact. Accordingly, the electrical industry often uses plasma pretreatment before joining to remove interfering layers such as surface oxide and organic compounds from the copper contacts.
