Process volume in a compact design
With a chamber volume of 4 - 8 litres, there is ample space available for a wide variety of applications. The Pico plasma system can be configured as either a benchtop unit or a floor-standing system and can be flexibly integrated into existing laboratory or production environments.
Depending on requirements, a range of control options is available, from a semi-automatic system, a Low Cost PC orBasic PC control, right through to a full PC control system. The latter enables the individual configuration of processes, the archiving of process data and alarm lists, as well as integration with an MES. This makes plasma processes transparent, reproducible and fully documentable.
The Pico plasma system is suitable for the cleaning, activation, etching and functionalisation of surfaces made from a wide variety of materials and is used in laboratories, development departments and industrial manufacturing processes.
Cleaning
The Low-Pressure Plasma system Pico offers solutions for ultra-precise cleaning of all surfaces, for every substrate, and for every post-treatment process. Plasma cleaning removes all organic residues without subjecting the component to chemical or thermal stress.
More informationActivation
Good surface wettability is a prerequisite for the adhesion of bonding partners during painting, gluing, printing, or bonding. Plasma activation using the Low-Pressure Plasma Pico system creates polar bonding partners and increases the surface energy.
More informationCoating
The Low-Pressure Plasma Pico system can also modify surfaces by applying a coating. Plasma coating can be used to deposit hydrophobic, hydrophilic, protective, or insulating layers of any kind.
More informationEtching
The plasma technology of the Low-Pressure Plasma Pico system enables anisotropic and isotropic etching. This results in the nanostructuring of surfaces, which increases their surface area and improves adhesion.

4 - 8l chamber
The Pico plasma system has a chamber volume of 4 - 8 litres, which is ideally suited to larger industrial components. For applications requiring a high degree of purity, chambers made of borosilicate or quartz glass are available. These offer impressive chemical resistance, ensuring a high level of process purity. For certain applications, a rotary drum is also available to ensure uniform treatment. This enables the Pico plasma system to be used in medical technology or laboratory work. For industrial applications, stainless steel or aluminium chambers are available, which ensure particularly safe and stable industrial processes.

Modular system
Drawing on years of experience and proven concepts, Diener electronic has developed a unique modular system that allows the Pico plasma system to be flexibly configured. To enable easy integration into an existing production environment, the Pico plasma system can be built into a compact benchtop housing or a sturdy floor-standing housing. The chamber size determines the choice of housing and the appropriate control unit. The result is a bespoke production system for industries with demanding applications.

Control
For the compact design of the Pico in the benchtop unit, you can choose between the LowCost, Basic PC and the user-friendly semi-automatic control system. With the semi-automatic control system, the process parameters can be set manually, meaning that no prior knowledge is required to operate the machine. For industrial applications, a robust floor-standing housing with a simpler Low Cost or Basic PC control system featuring pre-set processes is well suited. For demanding production environments, a Full PC control system is available. This provides process archiving, alarm logs and network connectivity. Process transparency and traceability form the basis for efficient and cost-effective production.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
Can the chamber door be opened whilst the machine is running?
Under normal circumstances, no – the negative pressure created by the vacuum pulls the door against the chamber housing.
What can be covered using the Pico?
The Pico from Diener electronic can be used to process all vacuum-resistant materials.
Can temperature-sensitive components be processed using the Pico?
Yes, as this is a cold plasma, the low-pressure plasma systems Pico from Diener electronic are suitable for temperature-sensitive components.
Can ESD-sensitive components be handled using the Pico?
Yes, this is possible using low-pressure plasma of the Pico. A trial can be carried out in our process department on request.
Which surfaces can be activated using the Pico plasma system?
The Pico plasma system from Diener electronic can be used to activate the following surfaces: plastics, metals, glass, ceramics and textiles.
Is the Pico plasma system suitable for continuous operation?
All standard and specialised systems for industrial use, such as the Pico from Diener electronic, are designed for continuous operation and are serviced at regular intervals by service engineers to ensure they remain in good working order.
What is the typical process temperature for the Pico in the vacuum chamber?
With the Pico from Diener electronic, the temperature is normally between room temperature and approximately 80 °C – depending on the component, chamber type, process time and load quantity. Higher temperatures can be achieved on request from Diener electronic using heating elements.
What connectivity options are available for the software control system on the Pico system?
With its full PC control system, the Pico plasma system from Diener electronic offers the following connection options, such as:
- higher-level control systems, e.g. via Profinet
- MES systems, e.g. via OPC UA
- Database connection via ODBC
Can the control software for the Pico plasma system be adapted to meet our requirements?
On request, we at Diener electronic can customise the full PC control system for the Pico series. Please do get in touch with us regarding this.
Are exhaust air filters necessary?
Yes, all systems must be connected to a proper exhaust system, regardless of the type of gas used! Nitrogen oxides, exhaust gases, fine oil mist (from oil pumps), etc. are produced, which must not be inhaled; furthermore, the gases are often acidic, meaning they promote the rusting of surrounding parts, machinery and equipment.
