Teflon

In common usage, the brand name TEFLON by the manufacturer Dupont is the much better-known designation for the plasticPTFE (polytetrafluorethylene) than the correct technical name.

PTFE was invented in 1938 in the Dupont laboratories. First, the material was used to make containers for extremely aggressive substances. While PTFE belongs to the thermoplastics it cannot be processed by injection moulding but only by sintering.

For this reason, Dupont in the 1960s launched the material Teflon PFA which is likewise based on completely fluorinated polymers and whose characteristics are similar to those of PTFE, but which can be processed by injection moulding.
