Stainless steel

Collective term for steels which, due to alloying of non-ferrous metals – mostly chromium and nickel – are much more corrosion-resistant than pure iron.

Stainless steel is divided into the following classes depending on its composition:

  • Chrome steel: alloy of iron and chrome (e.g. cookware)
  • Chrome-nickel steel: alloy of iron, chromium and nickel (e.g. dishwashers)
  • Chrome-manganese steel: alloy of iron, chromium and manganese (e.g. tools)
