Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is an amorphous thermoplastic polymeric material. Beyound the plastic materials which can be crystal clear it is the one with the best mechanical performance. It therefore is mainly appiled for transparent components which can be extremely stressed in use or which are used for high-class applications. Also impact resistant glazings are preferably made from polycarbonate. Specific products which are commonly made from PC are optical components like lenses or glasses and almost all CD and DVD produced worldwide. Also coloured polycarbonate sheets are often used for applications with superior esthetic appearance.

Polycarbonate is a polar polymere and therefore has a relatively high surface energy. Glueing and painting often does not require plasma activation. However polycarbonate can be protected by plasma coating by DLC-layers.

CD, DVD and many high-performance transparent plastic components are made from Polycarbonate. DLC coating can be applied to improve scratch resistance.
