Electroplating of plastic

Substrates to be electroplated need to be electrically conductive. Therefore by virtue of plastics insulating properties the cannot be electroplated. Anyhow the multitude of treatment procedures to plastics materials enables electroplating. Furthermore it is a major industrial application to provide elegant plastic components with a metallic appearance mainly for residental, sanitary and car interior applications.

Plastic substrates may be electroconductive either by its intrinsic structure or by addition of electroconductive furnace or by deposition of electroconductive layers.

Plasma treatment may improve the adhesion of electroplated layers.

Alternate to electroplating metalic coating plastics can receive metalic coating by CVD- or PVD-technologies. In order to avoid high temperatures usualls PACVD technology is applied to coat plastic materials.
