Silicon dioxide

SiO2, the most abundant compound in the earth crust, hard and thermally resistant, very good insulator. Frequently used in microelectronics as an insulator layer, mostly generated by oxidation of pure silicon. Can be etched in the plasma by means of halogen- (and in particular fluorinated) gases so that the silicon below is exposed once more.
