Glossary of surface technology
Plasma carburising
Hardening of steel surfaces by increase of the carbon content by means of plasma diffusion or hydrocarbon gases and subsequent quenching. In contrast to conventional “carbonising” of steel, no significant surface oxidation of the surface takes place in plasma carburising, and the process is faster. In most cases, the surface hardness is somewhat lower than with nitriding processes, but the diffusion coat is usually thicker.
