Micro-sandblasting

Ions bombarding a substrate surface without a chemical reaction can have a physical effect on the surface by chipping the atoms and molecules off it. This removes surface coat components, contaminations, or the substrate itself. The effect is the same as in sandblasting with an atomic-scale grain.
