Magnetic mirror

Charged particles move in magnetic fields as a result of the Lorentz force on helical tracks. When the magnetic field lines diverge, the Lorentz force has a force component on average over one revolution of the particle around the magnetic field line which points in the direction of the weaker magnetic field. In places with an abrupt increase of the magnetic field, this leads to a reflection of charged particles.
