Glass etching

Glass can be chemically etched by means of hydrofluoric acid, which however is highly toxic and can cause severe chemical burns. As an alternative, controlled etching of glass can also be effected in a plasma when fluorinated process gases are used. In this method, there is no direct contact between the etching fluorine compounds and their environment.
